This panel brings together speakers who have published books in music psychology to share their perspectives on the journey from idea to publication. Panelists will discuss key stages of the process, including conceptualising a book, developing a compelling proposal, refining and reaching an audience, the lived experience of writing, marketing and promotion, and what life looks like after publication – from launch through to what comes next.
Dr Jason Goopy is a Senior Lecturer at Edith Cowan University and Fulbright Scholar. His interdisciplinary research at the nexus of music, education, and psychology examines how individuals and communities can live healthy and creative lives. He has a particular focus on how music engagement and learning shape and support identities and wellbeing across the lifespan using creative arts-based and mixed-method approaches. Jason received the Australian Society for Music Education Callaway Doctoral Award, and his subsequent monograph, Teenage Boys, Musical Identities and Music Education: An Australian Narrative Inquiry (Routledge, 2024), is published open access in the SEMPRE Studies in the Psychology of Music series.
Associate Professor Melissa Forbes is a Churchill Fellow whose research explores singing as an embodied practice of care that fosters social connection. Melissa’s interdisciplinary work draws on music education, the psychology of music, positive psychology, and contemporary leadership theories to highlight the cultural and social value of participatory music-making as essential public health infrastructure. Her monograph, Making Music That Matters: Positive Music Leadership for Social Health (Routledge, 2025), and her podcast, Leading Notes (2025, funded by the Winston Churchill Trust), amplify the positive impact of community music leaders from across the world.
