Research Assistant Opportunity: The role of trauma-informed community music education in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people.
The chief investigator is seeking a Research Assistant for this innovative and important
research project. This position is suited to emerging and established researchers interested
in music education/psychology, wellbeing and/or trauma-informed practices.
Project Summary
This project aims to investigate how a trauma-informed approach to music education might
support the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people in community settings.
Internationally, community music programs have been positioned as an opportunity for
intervention and employed in various mental health initiatives, however, research in this area
is only emerging in Australia. Through three Australian case studies involving rich qualitative
and arts-based data, this research will generate important insights as to how trauma-
informed community music education programs can support the psychological needs of
children and young people in a non-medical and community-based way.
The Position
A Research Assistant (RA) with suitable expertise and experience will assist with the research
project as directed by the chief investigator. Work may include literature searches; manage
travel and accommodation bookings; liaise with community music providers; manage
participant information and consent; and manage the secure storage of data, including
interview recordings, transcripts, and artistic products including performance and
composition recordings (audio and video), drawings, and photographs.
The nature of the work will allow for flexibility and to work online anywhere in Australia.
Payment
The RA will be appointed at HEW5 Step 100 ($48.4477 per hour) and employed at 273 hours
for 2023 (0.14 FTE) to a total value of $15,720. This project is funded by an ECU Early-Mid
Career Research Grant.
