Considering Plan D: Data Science after Academia

Summary: Dave Baker will argue for why music psychologists should adopt, learn, and use tools that exist at the crossroads of open science and data science. After arguing as to why using open source software is superior for both the individual and the community, he will offer suggestions on how to communicate research you have done with these tools to highlight the magnitude and scope of your abilities in the context of interviewing for a position in the field of data science.
Our presenter: David John Baker is a music researcher who investigates how tools from cognitive psychology and computational musicology can help understand cognition in ways only possible with music. He commits to an interdisciplinary approach grounded in music theory, but works extensively with computer science and psychology; working between these areas has led to professional affiliations in each of his areas of expertise. Relevant to this talk, he also spent a year as a Lead Instructor of Data Science at a coding bootcamp in London. He currently works as a Postdoctoral Research associate at the University of Amsterdam in the Music Cognition Group.
